SRO! not SRno

A proposal for a multi-unit housing development on small, vacant and traditionally unviable city properties. SRO SRno, sought to challenge the stigma of single room occupancies, a transient housing type, that has been informally adopted into the city's housing stock.

Better Cheaper
The minimum size of an affordable housing unit is 400 square feet, that is unaffordable. Better Cheaper asserts that affordable housing can compete with market rate housing by redefining the size limits of what is affordable. Simply, it proposes a smaller unit. With unit sizes at 250-300 square feet, slimmed down, Better Cheaper can be both market rate and affordable housing.

Rent Single Rooms
Bring back new single room occupancies (SROs). While the Single Room Occupancy was eliminated as a feasible zoning option in the 1950s, the concept is making a resurgence in shared apartments, co-living arrangements and, of course, existing SRO buildings. ‘Sharable Living’ is the only affordable option for the majority of Manhattan and Brooklyn residents, allowing young professionals and creatives to contribute to the fabric of New York City.

Split level privacy

Two units are paired together, connected by a shared common space and communicating stair. A kitchen, bath and dining area are shared between units and domicles have an interior operable facade of screens and curtains allows residents to dial-in the level of privacy that suits them best.

Unit

Units, around 200 square feet are flexible spaces that can be converted from bedroom to living room. They are stocked with a storage system that is integrated into the construction of the load-bearing concrete masonry walls. A simple and economic material is elevated through the simple structural tie-back connectionns and a rich terracotta color that pulls the exterior identity into the interior.
